Margaret Shabazz Announces Candidacy for Wichita City Council, District 6
A Legacy of Leadership. A Future of Accountability.
WICHITA, KS — Margaret Wheeler Shabazz, a proud Wichita native and third-generation
activist, has officially announced her candidacy for Wichita City Council District 6, which
includes Riverside, Midtown, and much of north-central Wichita. At 40 years old, Shabazz
brings a bold, compassionate vision rooted in her lived experiences, professional expertise, and lifelong dedication to her community.
A Legacy of Leadership. A Future of Accountability
My "Why"

“I’m running because I believe District 6 deserves a leader who listens, leads with integrity, and
fights for every neighbor,” said Shabazz. “This is my home. I’m raising my daughters here. I’ve
seen the beauty and the challenges of our community, and I’m ready to be a voice for the
people.”
Backgrounder

Raised in Wichita and named after her grandmother Margaret—a revered community leader—
Shabazz grew up in a household grounded in civic responsibility. Her mother, Kathyrn
Johnson, and grandmother both modeled what it meant to serve. As a teen, Shabazz joined
Hope Street Youth Development, where she taught anger management courses and co-founded
the STOP Cards initiative, a youth-led movement that fostered respectful interactions between
law enforcement and young people.
Now

A Midtown homeowner and mother of two—Tyrescia Gordon (19) and Essence Shabazz
(9)—Margaret has firsthand understanding of the everyday challenges working families face.
As a military widow, she has rebuilt her life with resilience and faith, leaning on her
community at Holy Savior Catholic Church for support.
Career

Shabazz currently works as a Process Assurance Trainer at Vestas, a global wind energy firm,
where she oversees staff development and leads process improvements across 52 sites in the
Midwest. With a background in procurement, warehouse operations, and logistics, her career
exemplifies steady, values-driven growth and problem-solving.
Campaign Pillars

Affordable Housing: Advocating for development that protects existing neighborhoods
while ensuring access for working families.
• Mental Health Access: Supporting culturally competent, trauma-informed care that
meets residents where they are.
• Compassionate Solutions to Homelessness: Addressing root causes and investing in
long-term support services rather than short-term fixes.
