Margaret Shabazz for Wichita District 6 Representative 2025
"Let's Fix District 6!"

Margaret Shabazz: Candidate for Wichita City Council,
District 6

A Legacy of Leadership. A Future of Accountability.
Margaret Wheeler Shabazz is a third-generation activist, a proud
Wichita native, and a dedicated candidate for Wichita City Council
District 6—home to Riverside, Midtown, and much of north-central
Wichita. At 40 years old, Margaret brings a bold and compassionate
vision grounded in lived experience, professional expertise, and a
lifelong commitment to community service.
Raised in Wichita, Margaret is named after her grandmother,
Margaret, a community leader whose example—along with that of
her mother, Kathyrn Johnson—instilled in her a deep belief in civic
duty from an early age.

As a teenager, she became actively involved in Hope Street Youth
Development, where she led peer anger management classes in schools and helped launch
STOP Cards—a youth-led initiative that encouraged respectful engagement with police
officers and built bridges between law enforcement and the community.
Margaret is now a homeowner and seven year resident of Midtown, where she is
raising her two daughters, Tyrescia Gordon (19) and Essence Shabazz (9). As a young
widow, she understands the challenges of rebuilding after loss and the resilience required to
keep moving forward. Her faith community at Holy Savior Catholic Church remains a
cornerstone in her life.

Professionally, Margaret is a Process Assurance Trainer for Vestas, a global wind energy
company, where she trains staff at 52 sites across the Midwest and leads process improvement
in inventory management. Her work history includes roles in procurement, scheduling, and
warehouse operations, and she has built a career on rising through the ranks with grit,
adaptability, and a deep passion for helping people.

Her campaign is focused on restoring safety and dignity in District 6 through:
 Affordable housing solutions that preserve neighborhoods while expanding access
for working families.
 Mental health resources that meet people where they are, with culturally competent
and trauma-informed care.
 Compassionate responses to homelessness, prioritizing supportive services over
stopgap measures that push people further to the margins.
Margaret has raised serious concerns about the city’s handling of the unhoused, particularly in
Midtown—citing the need for comprehensive support services rather than just temporary
shelters.

She’s also committed to revitalizing business corridors like Broadway, where she’s
seen too many storefronts close and too little done to bring them back.
With roots in Wichita, a track record of service, and the determination of someone who’s
worked for everything she’s achieved, Margaret Shabazz is ready to represent the people of
District 6 with transparency, courage, and results.

Margaret Shabazz. Grounded in Community. Focused on Solutions.
